Mountain Ash-based school, Abercynon Community Primary has received a donation from the Trade Centre Wales to help raise funds to purchase an Oxford reading book for every child in the school from nursery to Year 6.

In an effort to raise the money needed, the school’s Parent Teacher Association invited 50 pupils to the first Easter egg hunt, where pupils from all year groups were joined by their families to spend the afternoon finding eggs hidden within the school grounds.

With limited funding to provide the Easter eggs, the PTA reached out to the UK’s fastest growing used car retailer for support and received 50 chocolate eggs, one for every pupil who attended the event.

The event managed to raise £160 in total from ticket sales and a raffle, meaning the PTA are now one step closer to being able to provide each child with a brand-new reading book.

Easter egg hunt

Kelly Ursell, PTA board member, said: “The afternoon was really successful, and we had great feedback from parents and kids. We wrote each pupil’s name on their own individual egg, so that all who took part could take the time to find their own, personalised Easter treat.

“We’re always grateful for support from local businesses, but we never thought a company the size of Trade Centre Wales would be so supportive of a little school like ours. The eggs were delivered straight to the school, so it made the whole event easy to organise.

“If we hadn’t been given the eggs, we would have had to buy them ourselves which would have eaten into our profits from the event.  Our aim for the year is to raise enough money to buy new reading books, as the books they take home at the moment are very well used!

“We’re definitely planning to run the event again next year and want to thank the Trade Centre Wales team for the kind donation. This money will go towards our annual fundraising target which we hope will be enough to purchase the new reading books.”

Uplifting the local community

Andy Coulthurst, CEO of Trade Centre Wales, said: “We take pride in supporting the local communities around each our showrooms, so we were more than happy to support Abercynon Community Primary in its first Easter egg hunt.

“With many primary schools across Wales experiencing financial struggles, we’re glad to do whatever we can to contribute to better resources for literacy in schools. We would like to wish the Abercynon Community Primary PTA all the best for their future fundraising efforts, and hope the pupils enjoyed their Easter eggs!”
