Trade Centre Wales continues its Community Engagement Programme, working with local schools to inspire young people, build confidence and encourage positive life choices. A key part of this work has been brand ambassador Gareth “Alfie” Thomas, whose recent visits to Afon y Felin have had a strong impact on pupils.

After recently completing marathons in London and Madrid, Alfie could have taken time to rest, but instead chose to continue sharing his experiences with children and encouraging resilience, teamwork and perseverance.

Speaking to pupils, he highlighted the importance of working together towards a shared goal and taking ownership of individual actions. He encouraged children to think about what they do when no one is watching, and how that reflects in school, in learning, and in the choices, they make day to day. He also spoke about giving back to the community and supporting charitable work, reinforcing the idea that success is more meaningful when it benefits others.

One of the key messages shared was that the hardest part of any challenge is not the finish line but getting to the start line in the first place — taking that first step and committing to it.

To bring this to life, the whole school took part in a collective challenge, running a total of 26.2 miles throughout the day, working together to complete the equivalent of a full marathon through shared effort.

Trade Centre Wales ambassador, Gareth “Alfie” Thomas said:

“It’s not just about crossing the finish line, it’s about having the courage to start. What you do when no one is watching matters just as much as what you do when everyone is. If you can work together, take ownership, and keep going when things get tough, you can achieve more than you think.”

Mark Bailey, founder, and director of Trade Centre Wales, said:

“Our programme continues to focus on real impact within local communities, and having Alfie on board and using sport to help young people build resilience, and drive ambition will help children believe they can achieve”

The Community Engagement Programme continues to support schools like Afon y Felin with initiatives that encourage teamwork, determination, and positive decision-making in everyday life.
