Rugby Legend ‘Alfie’ Joins Youngsters in Bridgend for Community Kick-About

Youngsters in Bridgend were left buzzing after Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas dropped in for a surprise kick-about during a community engagement session at Evergreen Hall on Tuesday evening.
Armed with a handful of rugby balls and his trademark enthusiasm, Gareth spent time chatting, laughing, and playing rugby with young people aged 11–25, helping to break down barriers and build trust through sport.
As an official Trade Centre Wales Ambassador, Gareth has been actively involved in the company’s growing community engagement programme, working alongside outreach officers and local youth support networks to connect with young people in a positive, meaningful way.
“I’m incredibly passionate about helping youngsters grow into the best versions of themselves,” said Gareth. “Sometimes it’s as simple as showing up, having a kick-about, and really listening. That’s how trust starts.”
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between young people and vital support services, with social workers and community outreach officers using informal engagement to offer guidance, advice, or support where needed. Activities like sport play a key role in creating safe, relaxed environments where young adults feel comfortable opening up.

The work at Evergreen Hall in Bridgend continues to grow, with increasing engagement from local young people and strong collaboration between Trade Centre Wales, community officers, and youth services.
Mark Bailey, Founder and Director of Trade Centre Group, praised the impact of the programme:
“At Trade Centre Wales, community is at the heart of everything we do,” said Mark. “Seeing someone like Gareth out there with the outreach officers, engaging with young people and earning their trust, shows what this programme is all about—understanding, connection, and creating real opportunities for support and growth.”
By meeting young people where they are and engaging through shared activities, Trade Centre Wales and its partners continue to make a positive difference—helping young adults feel seen, supported, and inspired.
